The Competition of Bangkok’s Hotels Will Persist

For the hotel industry in Bangkok, the year 2011 will be pivotal in the process of building up pressure on the rates and occupancy of the city. MarketView Bangkok Luxury Hotel Q1/2011 of CB Richard Ellis Thailand has released the report: From January to March this year, the inventory in Thai capital’s center grew to 29, 511 rooms. It included the area of Ploenchit, Sukhumvit, Silom, Riverside and Sathorn. In other words, there was a growth of 1% quarter-on-quarter and 8% year-on-year. (for full details you can download the report at www.cbre.co.th )

So far, there are 7 hotels that were recently opened in Bangkok: Novotel Bangkok Fennix Ploenchit Hotel came with 370 rooms, Best Western Bangkok Hiptique Hotel was opened with 50 rooms, 75 rooms of Sivatel Bangkok Central Hotel, Park Plaza Bangkok Hotel Sukhumvit Soi 18 popped out with 125 rooms, Ramada Encore Bangkok Hotel was built with 188 rooms, The St. Regis Bangkok Hotel followed with 227 rooms (including 51 suite) and eventually the Best Western Plus Sukhumvit with 78 rooms.

This year, there will be an addition of 5,199 rooms which will join the 1,100 rooms that have been included to the inventory of Bangkok beforehand. The 19% growth includes one thousands and fifty-five of economy rooms, one thousands one hundred and sixty-eight of mid-range rooms, two thousands seven hundred and seventy-three of first class rooms and two hundred and twenty-four of luxurious rooms.

Novotel Bangkok Platinum, Bangkok, The Siam, Hotel Muse (www.themusehotel.com), Four Points by Sheraton Sathorn, Golden Tulip Mandison Suites and Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn will be opened this year. The numbers of the hotel rooms are respectively: 283, 297, 39, 166, 421, 120 and 390. They will definitely contribute to the surplus of rooms in downtown Bangkok.

Because of the growth of hotel room inventory numbers in the city, the competition is also expected to grow, too. A large amount of newly-built hotels is expected to knock down ADR. According to the report, the tourism industry of the country would also largely depend on the result of the Presidential Election that has been held last July 3rd, 2011.
